Environmental Statistics
The objective of environmental statistics is to provide comprehensive cross-section information and data collected from different areas of the environment, making it as comprehensible as possible. The statistics are supposed to provide exact statistical data for follow-up analyses of the state and the development of the environment, including statistical comparisons between both regions and countries.
Accurate and objective statistical data is required by politicians, businessmen and industrial representatives whose decisions have to be based upon correct statistical data. Accurate information is also required by citizens and media that need to objectively assess the environment we live in and the trend of its development.
Statistical activities are in line with Act No. 123/1998 Coll., on the Right to Environmental Information, and Act No. 106/1999 Coll., on Free Access to Information. In this respect the data has to be accessible not only separately, but also in interrelationship. This is mainly accomplished through statistical yearbooks or by constantly updated data files available in hard or soft copies.
Environmental statistics is closely related to reporting, i.e. the preparation of both comprehensive and specialised reports, the purpose of which is to evaluate the state and development of the environment, including environmental impacts of other economic sectors, using the available statistical data. Another objective of reporting is to provide regular information (national data) abroad as a result of international liability of the Czech Republic.
Statistical data is also used to build up the Environmental and Sustainable Development Indicators which serve as an instrument for the assessment and quantitative evaluation of environmental trends and objectives of environmental policy, evaluation of progress and formulation of possible development. The indicators also provide simpler and more understandable information than complicated statistics.
