Home Local Agenda 21 Working Committee

The Local Agenda 21 Working Committee of the Government Council for Sustainable Development (hereinafter LA21 WC GCSD) was established by the Government Council for Sustainable Development (GCSD) on its 4th meeting on 15 April 2004.

The Committee is presided by the Minister of the Environment.

The Working Committee continues the activities of the National LA21 Working Committee, which was established within the Ministry of the Environment in October 2003 in cooperation with the Czech Environmental Institute (now CENIA) and the National Network of Healthy Cities of the Czech Republic (NNHC CR) and which started to deal with the broader implementation of the local Agendas 21 in the Czech Republic.

The Working Committee consists of representatives of the ministries, CENIA, regional authorities, municipal authorities, NNHC CR, state nature protection, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the academic sphere. In addition to the official members of the Working Committee, the meetings may also be attended by guests interested in the local Agendas 21 in the Czech Republic.

The main objective defined by the Committee is for the LA21 process to become a common tool within the operation of public administration in the Czech Republic.

The outcome of the Working Committee’s activities so far has been the establishment of criteria for LA21, according to which it will be possible to objectively evaluate the progress of the implementation of LA21 in individual cities, municipalities and regions of the Czech Republic and which the ministries should follow when promoting LA21 in the future.

In the meetings of the LA21 Working Committee, the participants deal not only with the tasks arising out of the defined objectives of the group, but also with the current events in the area of LA21 and sustainable development (e.g. the update of the State Environmental Policy, the new version of the Building Act, the National Sustainable Development Strategy, SEA, etc.)
